How to use the travel packing weight fields accurately
Start with the allowance for the specific airline, route, fare, and bag type. A familiar 23 kg checked limit is not universal, and cabin limits vary especially widely. The presets are convenient starting points, but the custom limit should take priority whenever your ticket states something different.
Count clothes as individual garments rather than outfits. A shirt, trousers, and jumper are three entries. Shoes are counted by the pair. The toiletries field represents filled wash bags, while electronics should include devices and the chargers normally packed with them. Put books, gifts, food, a hair dryer, or other unclassified objects into the miscellaneous field as a combined weight in kilograms.
The empty suitcase field matters more than many travellers expect. A light holdall may weigh less than 2 kg, while a rigid four-wheel case can use 4 kg or more before anything is placed inside. The coefficients are planning averages, not claims that every object has the same mass. A T-shirt may weigh less than 0.2 kg, while jeans or a winter coat can weigh much more than 0.3 kg. Sandals may be far lighter than the shoe allowance, whereas hiking boots may exceed it. That variation is why a small safety margin is valuable.

Worked example: packing a week-long checked suitcase
Suppose a traveller packs ten garments, two pairs of shoes, one toiletries bag, one laptop and charger, 1 kg of miscellaneous items, and a 3.5 kg suitcase. Clothing contributes 3 kg, shoes contribute 2 kg, toiletries contribute 1.5 kg, and electronics contribute 2 kg. Adding the miscellaneous kilogram and the case gives a total of 13 kg, or about 28.7 lb.
Against a 23 kg checked allowance, that leaves 10 kg of estimated headroom. The same contents would exceed a 10 kg cabin allowance by 3 kg. The comparison demonstrates why the allowance is not merely a label: changing the bag type can turn an easy checked load into an overweight cabin bag even though no packed item changes.

Reading the result and reducing an overweight suitcase
A green result with several kilograms of headroom is a useful planning signal, but it does not guarantee acceptance. An amber result within 1 kg of the allowance should be checked on a real scale. A red result identifies the estimated overage. Airlines may charge a fixed overweight fee rather than a price for each kilogram, so even a small overage can be expensive.
When weight needs to come out, start with dense or unusually heavy items. Wear boots and a coat if the airline permits them at boarding. Move a laptop to an allowed personal item when that bag has a separate rule. Decant toiletries into smaller containers, remove duplicate chargers, and avoid carrying liquids that can be bought after arrival. Travellers with multiple bags may also be able to redistribute items, provided each individual bag remains within its applicable limits.
Recalculate after each decision. The category breakdown shows whether the case, clothing, electronics, or miscellaneous items dominate the total. Replacing a 4.5 kg hard-shell suitcase with a 2 kg soft bag can sometimes save more than removing several garments.
Assumptions and limitations of this luggage estimate
This calculator estimates weight from averages and cannot sense the actual contents of a bag. It assumes one bag is compared with one weight limit. It does not model pooled family allowances, route-specific exceptions, personal-item policies, sporting equipment, infant baggage, or loyalty benefits. It also does not test dimensions. A bag below its weight cap may still be rejected if it exceeds the permitted height, width, depth, or linear dimensions.

Confirm both weight and size rules directly with the carrier shortly before travel because baggage policies and fees can change.

Should the empty suitcase count toward the allowance? Yes. The airline scale measures the suitcase and its contents together. A heavy case can consume a large share of a low cabin allowance before packing begins.
How much safety margin should I leave? A margin of at least 1–2 kg is sensible when category averages are being used. Leave more when packing boots, coats, books, camera equipment, or full-size liquids.
Does being below the weight limit guarantee acceptance? No. Airlines also enforce dimensions, bag counts, personal-item rules, and fare-specific conditions. Check all applicable baggage terms for the ticket.
