Because the same depth and overlap additions appear in both directions, changing either one increases both recommended liner dimensions. Increasing pond length changes only the liner-length result, while increasing pond width changes only the liner-width result. Interpreting your pond liner dimensions

Worked example: pond liner sizing with depth and overlap
For a pond liner example, suppose you are planning a pond with these measurements:
- Length L = 10 ft
- Width W = 7 ft
- Max depth D = 2.5 ft
- Overlap each edge O = 1 ft

- Liner length = 10 + 2(2.5) + 2(1) = 10 + 5 + 2 = 17 ft

The resulting minimum liner size is 17 ft × 14 ft. If the available stock includes a 15×20 sheet, for example, that sheet satisfies both requirements because its two dimensions exceed 14 ft and 17 ft when oriented appropriately. Pond liner overlap guidance
Pond liner overlap is the material extending beyond the excavation that secures and conceals the liner at the edge. Many DIY pond installations use 1.0–1.5 ft per edge. Consider more, such as 1.5–2.0 ft, when heavy rock edging, soft or erodible soil, settling, or extra room for repositioning will affect how the pond liner is anchored.
