How this noise-dose calculator estimates daily hearing exposure

This noise-exposure calculator estimates the allowable time at the sound level you enter, the share of a conservative daily noise allowance used by that exposure, and a simplified risk warning based on that dose. It is intended for planning around loud music, tools, transit, work areas, and other sustained sound—not for diagnosing hearing injury.

The calculation uses two inputs. Sound level is the approximate level at your ear in decibels (dB), and exposure duration is the number of hours spent near that level. For several separate loud activities, calculate each activity and add the dose percentages. For example, a 40% dose from one task plus a 70% dose from another produces a 110% daily dose.

This page uses a protective 3 dB exchange-rate model with 85 dB treated as an 8-hour reference. Every 3 dB increase doubles sound energy and halves allowable time: 85 dB corresponds to 8 hours, 88 dB to 4 hours, 91 dB to 2 hours, 94 dB to 1 hour, and 97 dB to 30 minutes. Because decibels are logarithmic, a few dB can make a substantial difference to the time limit.

For this noise-dose formula, T is allowable exposure time in hours and L is sound level in dB. The calculator then divides your entered duration by T and expresses the result as a percentage. A 100% dose reaches the model’s daily allowance; a dose above 100% means the entered exposure exceeds that allowance.

At a fixed sound level, dose rises directly with time. At a fixed duration, a higher dB value cuts allowable time sharply and therefore increases dose. This is why using the level at the listener’s actual position matters: a reading taken far from a speaker, saw, or machine may understate the exposure at your ear.

The calculator converts the dose to its displayed estimated-risk percentage with a logistic curve. That percentage is a readable warning indicator, not a statement that a particular exposure will or will not cause permanent hearing damage. The curve remains lower at modest doses, rises around a 100% dose, and approaches 100% as the modeled dose becomes extremely large.

A 97 dB exposure illustrates the result. The formula gives an allowable time of 30 minutes. Entering 30 minutes produces a 100% dose, while entering 60 minutes produces a 200% dose. The comparison is useful because loud events can seem brief while consuming a large share of the daily allowance.

Read the result panel in order: compare your duration with allowable exposure, check noise dose as the daily share used, and treat estimated risk as a caution signal. When dose is high, the useful next step is usually to reduce time, increase distance, lower the source level, take quiet breaks, or use consistently fitted hearing protection.

These estimates are most useful for reasonably steady noise. In a changing environment, use the loudest sustained portion as a conservative screening level or calculate each distinct period separately. If you estimate a protected scenario, enter a cautious effective level after allowing for imperfect fit and real-world use rather than relying on a package rating alone.

Applying a daily noise-dose estimate to real listening and work situations

For a useful hearing-exposure estimate, choose the sound level at the place your ear will actually be. A phone app may offer a rough reading, but its microphone, placement, wind, and surroundings affect the result. At a concert, measure where you expect to stand; around equipment, use the operator position rather than a level recorded across the room.

When noise changes substantially during the day, calculate separate blocks rather than averaging them into one dB number. Ten minutes at 103 dB, thirty minutes at 94 dB, and an hour at 88 dB should be treated as individual exposures. Add their dose percentages afterward. This prevents a short, very loud period from being obscured by longer quieter periods.

Hearing protection can reduce the effective level, but its labeled rating is not a guaranteed field result. Earplugs must be inserted correctly, earmuffs need a good seal, and attenuation varies across frequencies. For a cautious comparison, use a conservatively reduced level in this calculator. Foam plugs labeled 29 dB, for instance, should not be assumed to turn a 100 dB environment into a reliably 71 dB exposure.

After substantial noise exposure, temporary muffling or ringing can occur. Those symptoms do not by themselves establish permanent damage, but they are reasons to take the exposure seriously. This calculator evaluates one day’s level-and-time combination; it cannot represent an individual’s full history of repeated exposure over months or years.

Noise standards are not identical. Some workplace rules use a 5 dB exchange rate, which permits longer times at the same level. This calculator deliberately uses the more protective 3 dB approach for its daily estimate. For workplace compliance, military noise, a medical concern, or persistent tinnitus, pain, dizziness, or hearing changes, use this result only as an initial planning tool and seek appropriate occupational-safety or audiology advice.

Small changes can materially reduce modeled dose. More distance from a speaker, a quiet break between noisy tasks, a lower headphone setting, or putting on protection before equipment starts may each change the available time substantially. The calculator’s purpose is to show that “a little louder” or “a little longer” can have a larger effect than it appears to have on a linear scale.
