How to use the NATO phonetic converter
- Type the characters to spell — for example, a name, email prefix, licence plate, aircraft registration, or order number — into the input box. Up to 2000 characters are accepted.
- Optionally tick “aviation radio number words” to encode 3, 4, 5, and 9 as Tree, Fower, Fife, and Niner rather than Three, Four, Five, and Nine.

For a clean sequence of supported letters and digits, encoding produces the corresponding spoken terms and decoding those terms returns uppercase characters. When decoding mixed prose, only recognized standalone code-word tokens are converted; other tokens remain visible in place.
Introduction: how the NATO phonetic alphabet works
The NATO phonetic alphabet, formally the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, gives every letter from A through Z its own spoken word. In this converter, A becomes Alfa, B becomes Bravo, and Z becomes Zulu. The words were selected and tested so that they remain distinguishable despite noise, interference, clipped audio, and differences in accent between speakers of different first languages.

Two of the spellings look like typographical errors but are deliberate: Alfa is written without ph, and Juliett carries a double t. Interpreting NATO phonetic converter results
In Text → NATO mode, the converter replaces each supported letter with its code word and each digit with a number word. Thus ABC becomes Alfa Bravo Charlie. With the aviation option selected, 3, 4, 5, and 9 become Tree, Fower, Fife, and Niner; otherwise they become Three, Four, Five, and Nine. A run of spaces, tabs, or newlines between two characters becomes a single forward slash, so word boundaries survive a round trip instead of vanishing.
In NATO → Text mode, the converter splits the input at whitespace and checks each token without regard to case. Consecutive recognized words are joined into one uppercase run: November Alfa Tango Oscar becomes NATO. A slash token, or the proword Break, closes the current run and starts a new word. A token that is not an exact recognized word, including a word with attached punctuation, is retained as its own text token rather than decoded.
Worked example: spelling an email name with NATO code words
To say the email name jsmith9 clearly on a noisy phone line, use the converter’s text-to-phonetic direction.

A second example shows the break marker and the aviation digits together. With the aviation option ticked, the aircraft registration G-ABCD 42 encodes to:

The hyphen is copied through because it is not a letter or a digit, and the space becomes /. Decoding that same line returns G - ABCD 42: the hyphen survives as its own token, the four letters rejoin into one run, and the slash restores the word break before the digits.

Limitations and assumptions of this NATO phonetic converter
This NATO phonetic converter uses a deliberately narrow, predictable lookup. Knowing how it treats characters and tokens helps explain results that differ from a spoken conversation.
- Supported letters: The mapping contains the basic Latin letters A–Z. Characters outside that set, once accents have been stripped, do not receive NATO code words when encoding.

Accents and non-ASCII text: Each character is decomposed and its combining marks removed before lookup, so
éencodes as Echo andñas November. Letters with no unaccented Latin base, such asßorø, and any non-Latin script are copied through unchanged. - Case handling: Letter lookup is case-insensitive. Encoded code words use their listed capitalization, while decoded recognized words become uppercase letters or digits.
- Digits: Standard output uses Zero through Nine. The optional aviation setting changes only 3, 4, 5, and 9 to Tree, Fower, Fife, and Niner; the decoder recognizes standard words, aviation words, and the ICAO pronunciation spellings Wun, Too, and Ait.

Spaces and punctuation when encoding: A run of whitespace becomes a single
/break marker, leading and trailing whitespace is dropped, and any other unsupported character, including punctuation, is emitted as itself. -

Formula: the NATO letter-to-code-word mapping rule
NATO phonetic conversion is a lookup rather than arithmetic. Encoding applies to each supported character, and decoding applies its inverse to recognized code-word tokens:
Because real input contains more than letters, the encoder is really a three-branch character rule. Writing for the letters, for the digits, and for one input character after accent folding:
The encoded string is the concatenation of over every character, joined by single spaces, with repeated break markers collapsed and any leading or trailing marker removed. Decoding is the same rule read backwards over whitespace-separated tokens: recognized words accumulate into a character run, a break marker or an unrecognized token flushes that run, and the surviving pieces are re-joined with single spaces. This is why clean code-word sequences round-trip exactly, while punctuation attached to a code word is not stripped before decoding.
Why NATO phonetic words improve voice spelling
NATO phonetic words give a listener more information than an isolated letter name. On a phone, two-way radio, or noisy work site, letters such as B, C, D, E, G, P, T, V, and Z can sound alike, while M and N or F and S may blur in interference. Saying “Bravo” instead of “B” supplies a longer, distinctive word that is easier to identify even if part of it is obscured.
That advantage makes the alphabet useful well beyond military communication. Pilots and controllers spell call signs and runway identifiers, mariners use it on VHF radio, and support staff use it to verify reference numbers and email addresses. It is equally useful for serial numbers, booking codes, and other strings where one wrong character changes the result.
The digit forms matter for the same reason. “Five” and “nine” are easy to confuse across a squelched channel, so radiotelephony stretches them into “fife” and “niner”; “three” is flattened to “tree” because the th sound does not exist in many languages. Frequently asked questions about the NATO phonetic alphabet
Is it spelled Alfa or Alpha?
The official ICAO and NATO spelling is Alfa, with an f. The spelling avoids relying on ph being pronounced as an f sound in every language. This converter always writes Alfa when encoding, and when decoding it also accepts the common variants Alpha, Juliet, Xray and Whisky.
Why is J spelled Juliett with two Ts?
Juliett has a double t so that the final t is not treated as silent by French speakers. Together with Alfa, it is an intentional spelling choice in the international radiotelephony alphabet.
What are Niner, Tree, Fower, and Fife?
They are ICAO radiotelephony forms for 9, 3, 4, and 5. Selecting the aviation radio number-word option makes this converter use Tree, Fower, Fife, and Niner when it encodes digits; all of those forms are recognized when decoding, along with Wun, Too and Ait.
Can I decode a full sentence, not just code words?
Yes. In Phonetic to Text mode, the converter examines whitespace-separated tokens. Recognized code words are combined into an uppercase character run, while unrecognized tokens remain as separate words. For example, call sign November Alfa Tango Oscar becomes call sign NATO.
How does the converter handle spaces and punctuation?
A run of whitespace between two characters is encoded as a single forward slash, which is the written break marker used in this converter. What happens to accented letters such as e-acute?

How to play Radio Net Copy
- Press Start drill. The receiver opens and a call sign begins arriving, one code word at a time.
- Each word appears letter-timed in the copy window. The bar underneath is the time you have left before the transmitter moves on.
- Send the character that the word stands for: Alfa means A, Niner means 9, and the proword Break means a word gap.
- A correct copy scores more when the signal is weak and when you answer early, and a streak multiplies every hit.
- Three lost characters closes the net. Levels arrive every second message, shortening the window, deepening the static, lengthening the group, and adding the aviation digit words and the Break proword.
