Enter the dry-to-touch times you expect for the base coat and top coat you are using. Base coats are often applied thinly, while top coats can differ substantially in feel and drying behavior. A top coat that seems dry on the surface may still leave the manicure susceptible to pressure, so use its entered time as part of a practical waiting plan rather than as a durability guarantee.
3) Color-coat dry time per coat (C)
The color-coat time is the most direct way to tailor this nail polish estimator to a particular bottle and setting. If you are uncertain, a careful home application may begin with a planning range of 8–12 minutes per color coat. Adjust that entry upward if your usual polish remains easily marked after that interval, or downward only when your own results support it.
4) Nail polish thickness factor (F)
The thickness factor represents how heavily the color polish is applied relative to an average layer. It does not change the base or top coat entries; it scales the combined time assigned to the color coats.
- 0.8–0.9: very thin color coats with minimal product on the brush
- 1.0: average color-coat thickness
- 1.1–1.3: heavier color coats with more product on each nail
If your nails regularly dent after the estimated dry-to-touch window, raise F, raise C, or both to better reflect your actual application. A thicker second coat can be particularly important to account for, even when the first coat was thin.
Worked example: a two-coat nail polish manicure
For this regular nail polish example, suppose the manicure uses a 2-minute base coat, two color coats estimated at 10 minutes each, an average thickness factor of 1.0, and a 2-minute top coat.

The estimated dry-to-touch time is T = 2 + 10 × 2 × 1.0 + 2 = 24 minutes. That result reserves 20 minutes for the two color layers and 4 minutes for the base and top coats together.
With the same products and coat count but a heavier color application of F = 1.2, the estimate becomes T = 2 + 10 × 2 × 1.2 + 2 = 28 minutes. The four-minute difference comes entirely from the thickness-adjusted color layers.
