For a night number n from 1 to 8, each menorah uses n Hanukkah candles and one shamash. With m menorahs, the calculator’s candle count for that night is:

Cumulative Hanukkah Candle Use Through a Night

To find the candles used through night n, the calculator adds the Hanukkah-candle counts for every night from 1 through n. That is the sum of the first n integers, multiplied by the number of menorahs.

For Hanukkah candles alone, excluding shamash candles:

Formula: T = m × (n(n + 1)) / 2

Adding one shamash per menorah on each of the n nights gives the calculator’s cumulative candle total:

Formula: T = m × [(n(n + 1)) / 2 + n]

Where:

• T is the total candles used from night 1 through night n, including shamash candles.
• n is the selected Hanukkah night, from 1 through 8.
• m is the number of menorahs lit on each included night.

Reading Your Menorah Candle Results

After you enter a Hanukkah night and the number of menorahs, the calculator reports two practical candle totals:

• Candles tonight: All Hanukkah candles and shamash candles needed for the selected night across the entered number of menorahs.
• Total so far: All candles used from the first night through the selected night, again including one shamash per menorah each night.

Use the tonight figure when setting out candles for a lighting. Use the cumulative figure to see how many candles have been consumed by that point in the holiday, which is useful when checking supplies for a household or event.

Worked Example: Three Menorahs on the Third Night

For three menorahs on the third night of Hanukkah, enter night = 3 and number of menorahs = 3.

Step 1: Candles Needed on the Third Night

Each menorah needs three Hanukkah candles and one shamash on night 3, or four candles per menorah. Across three menorahs:

• Candles per menorah tonight: 3 Hanukkah candles + 1 shamash = 4
• Candles tonight across all menorahs: 3 × 4 = 12 candles

Step 2: Candles Used Through the Third Night

For one menorah, the Hanukkah-candle counts over the first three nights are 1, 2, and 3. Those six Hanukkah candles are accompanied by three shamash candles, one for each night.

• Hanukkah candles: (1 + 2 + 3) × 3 menorahs = 18
• Shamash candles: 1 × 3 nights × 3 menorahs = 9
• Total through night 3: 18 + 9 = 27 candles

The calculator therefore returns 12 candles for that night and a cumulative total of 27 candles through the end of night 3.
