If your grocery purchase price is below pg*, groceries are cheaper under the assumptions. Above it, the subscription is cheaper. If every week is paused, both scenarios are identical even though the general break-even formula remains informative for an active box.

Worked example: three meal kit dinners for two people

Suppose a household pays $11.99 per kit serving plus $10.99 shipping. A box contains three recipes with two servings each, so it provides six weekly servings. Groceries cost an estimated $6.25 per serving before waste. Over 26 weeks, four deliveries are paused. Kit waste is estimated at 5%, while grocery waste is 21%.

The effective kit food cost is $11.99 ÷ 0.95, or about $12.62 per serving eaten. Grocery food costs $6.25 ÷ 0.79, or about $7.91 per serving eaten.
