The floor brackets mean "round down to a whole number of trims". A trim booked every three months at half an inch a visit removes c / k = 0.167 inch per month on average, so it eats a third of a 0.5 inch monthly growth rate. Retained length is what survives at the ends after trims, split ends, and mechanical breakage, and it is what you actually measure in the mirror. Trimming is not the enemy of that gap; it is the tool for managing it. A split end propagates upward along the strand, so a small trim removes a damaged centimeter, while a neglected split can cost several centimeters of breakage later on. - Whole-population averaging: it models the hair as one length, when a real head carries strands at every stage of the cycle, so ends thin out gradually rather than stopping at one line.
- No breakage modelling: only the trims you enter are subtracted. Split ends, heat damage, and mechanical breakage are not estimated, so real retained length usually lands below the projection.
- No anagen ceiling: the straight line keeps rising past the maximum length your growth phase can support. If a projection exceeds roughly your rate multiplied by your anagen duration, it is describing hair that would shed first.
- Typical scalp health: medical conditions, medications, and scalp disorders that change shedding or growth are outside the model.
- Stretched length: results describe physical strand length. Curl shrinkage is not modelled, so visible length can be far shorter than the number shown.
Because of these limitations, real-world results will rarely match the projection exactly, and that is expected.
