Those checks matter because the most common planning mistake is treating "full-time" as a synonym for "on track". A student enrolled at exactly 12 credits in fall and spring earns 24 credits a year. That satisfies the federal definition of full-time enrollment and of a full academic year, and it still puts a 120-credit bachelor's degree five years away. The classic four-year pace requires 30 credits a year, which means 15 credits a term with no summer work, or 12 to 13 a term with a summer session added. The calculator makes that gap visible instead of leaving it buried in a single projected date.
How to Use the Graduation Date Calculator
Pull the first two numbers straight from your degree audit rather than from memory. Total credits required is the figure your catalog lists for the degree โ most US bachelor's programs sit at 120 semester hours, associate degrees near 60, and licensure-driven majors such as engineering or education often run 124 to 130. Credits already earned is everything on your transcript that actually satisfies a degree requirement, including accepted transfer, Advanced Placement, or CLEP credit. Leave out courses you passed that do not count toward the degree; they cost you time but they do not shorten the remaining balance.
Credits per fall or spring term is the load you realistically expect to carry going forward, not the load you wish you could carry. Credits per summer session defaults to zero; set it above zero only if you intend to enrol in courses that count. Summer time still passes on the calendar either way, so leaving it at zero does not remove the summer from the projection โ it simply means no credits are earned during it.
Instructional weeks per fall or spring term should be the on-calendar length of the term including finals week. Sixteen is the common figure at semester institutions, and it sits comfortably against the roughly fifteen weeks the federal credit-hour definition describes. Instructional weeks per summer session is usually 6 to 12. Break weeks between consecutive terms covers winter break, the gap before summer, and the gap before fall. Finally, set next term start date to the first day of the term you will actually resume in and tell the calculator which term that is. The projection counts forward from that date, not from today, because a plan made in June should still count the fall term as its first step.

Worked Example: 42 Credits Left at 15 Credits a Term
Take a student in a 120-credit bachelor's program who has 78 credits on the transcript, plans on 15 credits each fall and spring, takes no summer courses, and resumes in a fall term beginning 24 August 2026. Terms are 16 weeks with 4-week breaks and the summer session is 8 weeks long.
The balance is 120 โ 78 = 42 credits. The first fall term runs weeks 0 to 16 and clears 15 credits, leaving 27. The following spring term begins at week 20 and ends at week 36, clearing another 15 and leaving 12. Summer passes without enrolment, so the clock advances through its 8 weeks and the surrounding breaks to week 52. The next fall term begins at week 52 and only needs 12 more credits, so it is the last one; it ends at week 68. Three enrolled terms, 68 calendar weeks, and a requirements-complete date of 13 December 2027 โ the end of that final fall term, not the end of the break after it.
Two details are worth pausing on. First, the ceiling matters: 42 รท 15 is 2.8, and 2.8 terms is not a thing you can enrol in. That trailing 0.8 of a term still puts you in a classroom for a full sixteen weeks, which is why the answer is three. Second, the naive formula that multiplies three terms by a 20-week cycle would report 60 weeks of enrolment spread over a longer span and would miss the empty summer entirely; walking the calendar term by term is what turns 42 credits into a December date rather than a vague "about a year and a half".
How Course Load Shifts the Finish Line

Limitations and Assumptions Behind This Projection
This calculator is a pacing model, not a degree audit, and the gap between the two is where most surprises live. These are the assumptions it makes explicit so you can decide whether they hold for you.
Credits are treated as interchangeable. The model only tracks a quantity. It does not know that your capstone must come last, that a required course runs only in spring, that a prerequisite chain is three terms deep, or that a residency rule demands a minimum number of credits earned at your own institution. Any of those can add a term the arithmetic never sees. A student can hold 118 of 120 credits and still be two terms away because the two remaining credits sit behind a sequence.
Every fall and spring term is assumed to be the same length, and every break the same length. Real calendars are lumpier: winter break is longer than the gap before summer, and finals weeks vary. The single break-week input is a uniform average. The results panel reports the modelled academic year that your inputs imply and warns when it drifts more than two weeks from the 52.18-week calendar year, because that drift compounds โ an error of one week per term becomes a month over eight terms.
The load you enter is assumed to be achieved. The model has no concept of a withdrawal, a failed course, a repeat, or a term taken off. A single dropped 3-credit course in an otherwise perfect 15-credit plan pushes the balance into an extra term far more often than students expect, because the last term is usually already partial. Re-running the calculator after every term, with the transcript figure rather than the planned figure, is the honest way to use it.
The unit is assumed to be consistent. Semester hours and quarter hours are not interchangeable: three quarter hours equal two semester hours. Mixing them makes the remaining balance wrong by fifty percent. The weekly study-hour estimate specifically assumes the 45-hour semester credit implied by 34 CFR 600.2, so quarter-hour users should scale it by two-thirds.
The output is a requirements-complete date, not a conferral or ceremony date. Institutions confer degrees on their own schedule and hold commencement on another. A finish in mid-December frequently means a diploma dated in December and a ceremony in May.
The federal figures are thresholds, not predictions. The 12-credit full-time rule and the 24-credit academic year are minimums for federal aid eligibility, and the three-hours-per-credit workload is a design expectation for accreditation, not a measurement of any particular course. Financial and personal constraints are outside the model. Scholarship credit caps, aid packages that require full-time status, visa duration limits for international students, employment hours, and health insurance eligibility tied to enrolment status all constrain the load you can choose. The calculator will happily project a 21-credit pace that no advisor would approve.
