For a vehicle trip, fuel efficiency is the distance covered for each unit of fuel consumed:

Common Fuel Efficiency Units

This fuel efficiency calculator uses MPG and km/L, both distance-per-fuel measures where a higher result means more distance from each gallon or liter. Fuel use is also often expressed as liters per 100 kilometers (L/100 km), a fuel-per-distance measure where lower values are better.

The two metric expressions move in opposite directions: as km/L rises, L/100 km falls. For example, a vehicle achieving around 15 km/L is in roughly the same efficiency range as one using about 6โ€“7 L/100 km.
