Introduction: a flight layover is a probability, not a fixed sum
A useful flight layover estimate must account for uncertainty in the inbound arrival, not merely add one guessed delay to an airport minimum. This calculator combines the published minimum connection time with transfer-specific allowances, then fits a simple delay model to the inbound flight’s on-time performance. It reports the layover required for your chosen confidence level and, when you enter an offered itinerary, the estimated chance of making that connection.
The result is a planning estimate rather than a promise. A minimum connection time, often abbreviated MCT, is the shortest scheduled arrival-to-departure interval that an airline’s booking system accepts for a particular airport, carrier and transfer type. It may already include ordinary walking, boarding and border procedures. Add only unusual steps that the published figure does not cover, such as a separate-ticket baggage transfer or an exceptional terminal move.
You can enter a layover directly in minutes or provide both local clock times at the connecting airport. The calculator wraps a departure after midnight into the following day. It also displays the time by which you should be at the onward gate, without incorrectly subtracting that boarding cutoff from the MCT a second time.
How to use the flight layover time calculator
Start the flight layover calculation by selecting the direction of travel through the connecting airport. Domestic-to-domestic transfers normally require fewer formalities than connections arriving from abroad. Enter the airline’s published MCT when you have it; otherwise, the IATA-default button supplies the fallback associated with the selected connection type.
- Select the connection type and enter the published minimum connection time in minutes.
- Add only transfer steps that are not already included in that published MCT.
- Enter the inbound flight’s percentage of arrivals within 15 minutes of schedule.
- Choose the probability target that matches the importance and flexibility of your trip.
- Enter the offered layover in minutes, or enter both local times to derive it automatically.
- Select the onward flight’s boarding cutoff and calculate the recommendation.
An 80% on-time value should be entered as 80, not 0.8. Both clock fields must refer to the same connecting airport. If only one clock field is filled, the calculator continues to use the minutes field and notes that both times are needed for clock-based arithmetic.
The flight-delay and required-layover formulas
The flight layover model defines as the effective minimum connection time, as the scheduled layover and as the inbound arrival delay. The transfer works when the delay does not consume more than the available slack:

All times are measured in minutes, while on-time performance and confidence are converted from percentages to fractions. The MCT establishes the operational floor. The reliability statistic establishes the additional cushion. A lower on-time percentage or a higher confidence target increases that cushion.
Minimum connection times for domestic and international transfers
Minimum connection times are filed scheduling rules, not universal descriptions of how quickly every traveler can cross an airport. Airline, terminal, flight direction and local border procedures can all change the applicable figure. When no airport-specific value is available, the calculator offers common industry fallbacks:

Use an airport- and airline-specific value whenever possible. If an international MCT already accounts for immigration, baggage and security, selecting those additions again would double-count the same work. The result includes a warning when the entered combination appears likely to do that.
Worked example: a 90-minute connection on an 80% on-time inbound flight
This worked flight-layover example starts with a 45-minute published MCT and a 15-minute terminal-change allowance, producing an effective MCT of 60 minutes. The inbound flight is within 15 minutes of schedule 80% of the time, and the offered layover is 90 minutes.
The fitted rate is about 0.1073 per minute. The offered itinerary has 30 minutes of slack above the effective MCT, so the estimated connection probability is about 96%. A 90% target needs roughly 21.5 minutes of slack, producing a recommended layover of 82 minutes after rounding upward. A 99% target needs about 43 minutes of slack and therefore a layover close to 103 minutes.
Adding only the fitted average delay would produce about 69 minutes. Under an exponential distribution, the mean is always at approximately the 63.2nd percentile. That is why “MCT plus average delay” sounds cautious but still represents a connection that fails more than one time in three within this model.
Layover clock arithmetic across midnight and before gate closure
A flight connection that arrives at 23:40 and departs at 00:55 lasts 75 minutes, not a negative number. The calculator converts each local time into minutes after midnight and performs one explicit daily wrap:
Both times are local to the connecting airport, so no time-zone conversion is normally necessary. A result of zero is treated as a next-day departure, or 1,440 minutes. Longer stopovers should be entered directly and are outside the intended model.

Here, is the selected number of minutes before departure when boarding closes. The deadline helps interpret usable ground time, but it is not added to the MCT because a standard MCT already runs from scheduled arrival to scheduled departure and includes boarding.
Transfer conditions that can lengthen a flight connection
Airport connection time can increase when the itinerary departs from the ordinary transfer covered by the published MCT. The calculator provides representative allowances for a terminal change, renewed security, immigration and customs, bag collection and recheck, and separate tickets.
These values are planning defaults rather than airport measurements. Immigration queues can change dramatically by terminal and hour. A terminal train may be faster than the default while a bus with a long headway may be slower. Travelers with reduced mobility, young children or unfamiliarity with the airport may reasonably add more time.
Separate tickets change the financial consequence of a missed connection. The second airline will generally not be responsible for a delay on the first ticket, and baggage may not be checked through. The 60-minute checkbox is therefore only a timing allowance; it cannot guarantee protection or rebooking.
Limitations and assumptions of the flight layover probability estimate
The flight layover probability is based on a deliberately simple exponential fit to one published statistic: the share of arrivals within 15 minutes of schedule. Real delays can have a heavier tail caused by severe weather, mechanical faults, crew constraints and network disruption. High-confidence outputs, especially 99%, should therefore be treated as optimistic estimates rather than guarantees.
Cancellations are not modeled. The displayed probability is conditional on the inbound flight operating. Two flights with the same on-time percentage can also have different patterns beyond the 15-minute threshold, which this one-parameter model cannot distinguish.
The selected connection-time additions are representative, and published MCTs vary by airport, carrier and terminal pair. Clock-time entry assumes a connection no longer than 24 hours and does not adjust for a daylight-saving clock change. The onward flight is assumed to leave on schedule; a late onward departure may help, but travelers should never rely on it.
No calculated confidence is an entitlement to boarding, rebooking, accommodation or compensation. Check the airline’s current rules, visa and transit requirements, baggage arrangements and airport guidance before booking a tight or costly connection.
Common questions about flight layover planning
Is adding the average delay to the minimum connection time enough?
No. Under this exponential model, a buffer equal to the mean delay corresponds to about 63% confidence, regardless of the fitted rate. Choose a confidence target instead.
Where can I find inbound on-time performance?
Airlines, booking services and transport-statistics sites may show the percentage of arrivals within 15 minutes of schedule. Prefer the specific inbound flight, then the route and carrier when flight-level data is unavailable.
Does the calculator subtract the boarding cutoff twice?
No. The cutoff is used to show the clock deadline and usable ground time. It is not added to the effective MCT because the MCT already extends to scheduled departure.
How is a layover after midnight calculated?
If the departure clock time is at or before the arrival time, the calculator adds 1,440 minutes. An arrival at 23:40 and departure at 00:55 therefore gives 75 minutes.
Should I trust a 99% recommendation?
Treat it as directional. Severe disruptions and cancellations are not captured adequately by the fitted distribution, so the model can understate extreme risk.
