The comparison is deliberately limited to money. A lower modeled cost does not determine whether a particular mask is appropriate for a setting. Fit, comfort, filtration, applicable workplace requirements, local guidance, and the practical availability of clean masks remain separate decisions. The calculation answers the narrower question of how your stated prices and washing routine affect the cumulative cost of reusable cloth masks versus disposable face masks.

How cloth-mask and disposable-mask inputs affect cost

Disposable mask cost per use is the amount spent for each disposable mask in the comparison. If a pack works out to 40 cents per mask, use 0.40. Including delivery or other purchase costs is reasonable when those costs are part of what you actually pay. A higher disposable price increases the cost avoided when a reusable mask is used instead.

Cloth mask purchase cost is the initial price of one reusable mask. The calculator divides this amount by the number of washes the mask is expected to survive. A higher-priced cloth mask therefore need not be more expensive per use if its usable life is also longer.

Washes a cloth mask survives is the durability estimate behind that purchase-cost share. A shorter wash life puts more of the original purchase price into every use. If durability is uncertain, run the calculator once with a cautious estimate and again with a more favorable one rather than treating a single estimate as certain.

Washing cost per load represents the money cost associated with the load carrying the masks, such as detergent, utilities, or a laundromat charge. If cloth masks are added to laundry you would run anyway, a marginal cost may be more appropriate than the full price of a dedicated load.

Value of time per wash load lets the calculation include the time you consider attributable to washing and handling reusable masks. It can be set to zero when that work does not feel like an added burden, or to an amount that reflects separate sorting, washing, drying, and storage effort.

Cloth masks washed per load divides both the laundry cost and time value among the masks in that load. Increasing this number lowers the modeled washing share for each cloth mask. Small dedicated mask loads do the opposite.

Days of mask use functions as the number of uses in the formulas. When one mask is used each day, days and uses are identical. If several masks are used per day, entering total uses makes the disposable and reusable totals correspond to actual consumption.

Cloth and disposable mask cost formulas

The reusable-mask calculation first converts a wash load into the amount assigned to each cloth mask.

The break-even line uses a separate shortcut: it compares the cloth mask's purchase cost with the per-use amount left after the laundry share is subtracted from the disposable price.

This shortcut shows N/A when the disposable cost per use is not greater than the per-mask laundry and time share. For the main cost decision, use the displayed cloth and disposable totals because those totals also include the cloth mask's wash-life allocation.

Worked cloth-mask versus disposable-mask example

Suppose disposable masks cost $0.40 per use. A cloth mask costs $12, is expected to survive 100 washes, and is washed in loads with $0.50 of direct cost plus $0.50 of time value. If 10 masks are washed per load and the comparison covers 180 uses, the load costs $1.00 and each mask receives a $0.10 wash-and-time share.

The cloth purchase-price share is $12 divided by 100 washes, or $0.12 per use. Adding the $0.10 laundry share produces a modeled cloth cost of $0.22 per use. At 180 uses, disposable masks total $72.00, while cloth masks total $39.60. Under these assumptions, cloth costs $32.40 less.

The calculator's break-even shortcut is 40 uses in this example: $12 divided by the $0.30 difference between the $0.40 disposable price and $0.10 laundry share. Test your own disposable price, wash-load size, and laundry cost because those assumptions can change the comparison substantially.

Reading the reusable-mask cost result

After you compare the options, the result panel lists the cumulative disposable cost and cumulative cloth cost for the entered number of uses. It then identifies the lower-cost option and states the difference. The table underneath shows how both totals grow one use at a time, which can be useful when the period is long or when you want to see whether a small per-use difference becomes meaningful over repeated use.

If cloth is less expensive in the result, that means the cloth formula costs less under your entered assumptions; it is not a recommendation about suitability or performance. If disposables are less expensive, check the assumptions with the largest effect: disposable price, cloth wash life, per-load laundry and time cost, and masks per load.

A directional check can help catch input mistakes. Raising the disposable price should raise the disposable total. Raising wash cost or time value should raise the cloth total. Raising masks per load should lower the cloth mask's laundry share. A longer cloth-mask wash life should lower its purchase-cost share per use.

Should reusable cloth-mask washing time be included?

Include a time value when washing and handling cloth masks creates effort you want reflected in the cost comparison. If the masks go into ordinary laundry with negligible additional work, zero or a small value may better represent the situation. If they require a separate load or extra handling, a larger amount may be appropriate.

Why can the cloth-mask break-even figure show N/A?

The result is N/A when disposable cost per use is not greater than the per-mask laundry and time share. In that case, the shortcut finds no per-use disposable saving available to pay back the cloth mask purchase price. Reducing load cost or washing more masks together lowers that recurring share.

What if several face masks are used each day?

Convert days to total uses. For example, two mask uses per day over 30 days can be entered as 60. Because both totals are multiplied by the entered value, this keeps the comparison aligned with the number of masks actually used.

Does the lower-cost mask option determine the best choice?

No. The result only compares the entered costs. It does not decide which mask has the needed fit, comfort, performance, convenience, or compliance for a particular situation.
