Canada Post Postage & Parcel Estimator

Introduction to Canada Post letter bands and parcel billing

Canada Post postage depends on more than scale weight. A letter must first fit a physical size tier, and its price then comes from a weight band. A parcel may instead be charged according to the space it occupies in a vehicle. This calculator separates those rules so that a greeting card, document envelope and shipping box are not treated as though they use the same pricing method.

Letter mode contains published Canadian Lettermail, United States letter-post and international letter-post prices. Enter the packed envelope’s dimensions and weight, choose its destination and, for a domestic letter weighing no more than 30 g, identify whether the postage comes from a booklet or is bought as a single stamp. Parcel mode does not pretend that one national parcel price applies everywhere. It accepts the base price and incremental charge from your own Canada Post quote or rate card, then performs the weight and rounding calculations.

Canada Post letter sizes and included postage bands

Canada Post letter classification begins with the finished envelope, including its contents. Standard mail can measure no more than 245 mm by 156 mm, be no thicker than 5 mm and weigh no more than 50 g. It must also be at least 140 mm by 90 mm. An item that exceeds a standard limit may still qualify as oversize mail if it remains within 380 mm by 270 mm, 20 mm thick and 500 g. Anything beyond those maximums needs a parcel service.

The built-in prices are Canadian dollars before tax. For Canada, the calculator uses $1.24 for a Permanent stamp bought in a booklet, coil or pane and $1.44 for a single stamp in the first band up to 30 g. The domestic price is $1.75 from over 30 g through 50 g. Oversize domestic bands are $2.61 to 100 g, $4.29 to 200 g, $5.98 to 300 g, $6.85 to 400 g and $7.36 to 500 g. U.S. and international tables are selected automatically from the destination control.

Formulas for Canada Post parcel dimensional weight

All measurements are normalized before pricing. A weight entered in grams is converted to kilograms for parcel calculations:

weight(kg)=weight(g)1000

Parcel volume is calculated from external dimensions in centimetres. Canada Post commonly uses a density factor of 6,000 cm³/kg for Regular Parcel and 5,000 cm³/kg for several faster, U.S. and international services. The service documentation or quote should determine the factor you select.

volumetricWeight(kg)=Length×Width×HeightDensityFactor

The chargeable figure is the greater of scale weight and volumetric weight. This prevents a large, light box from being priced like a compact parcel of the same mass.

billableWeight=max(actualWeight,volumetricWeight)

When a rate card says that each additional increment or part thereof is charged, the number of steps must be rounded upward:

steps=ceil(billableWeightbaseBandstepSize)

The estimated parcel charge combines the quoted base amount and those additional steps:

totalPostage=basePrice+steps×stepPrice

How to use the Canada Post postage estimator

For a letter, select Letter mode and the destination. Measure the longest side, shorter side and maximum thickness after sealing the envelope, then enter its weight. The calculator rotates the length and width internally, so entering those two sides in reverse does not change the classification. Submit the form to see the service tier, weight band, estimated postage and remaining room before a higher band.

For a parcel, obtain a quote or rate table for the correct origin, destination and service. Enter the box’s outside measurements, actual weight, density factor, base-band weight, base price, step size and price per step. Keep all rate values from the same table. The optional comparison fields let you test a second package with the same units and rates, which is useful when deciding whether a smaller box will reduce dimensional weight.

Worked example: a 40 g card and a compact parcel

A packed birthday card measuring 240 mm × 150 mm × 4 mm and weighing 40 g fits every standard-size maximum. Its weight is above 30 g but no more than 50 g, so domestic postage is $1.75. The booklet-versus-single choice does not affect that second band. If the envelope became 6 mm thick, thickness alone would move it to the oversize table even if its weight stayed unchanged.

For a parcel, suppose a 30 cm × 20 cm × 10 cm box weighs 1.2 kg and uses the Regular Parcel factor of 6,000. Its 6,000 cm³ volume produces a volumetric weight of 1.0 kg, so actual weight governs. If $18.50 covers 1.0 kg and each additional 0.5 kg or part costs $2.90, the 0.2 kg excess rounds to one full step. The estimate is therefore $21.40. A much larger box could make dimensional weight govern and add several steps without changing the contents.

Interpreting Canada Post postage results

A letter result identifies the destination, physical tier and applicable weight band before showing the price. Warnings explain when an envelope is below the minimum size or beyond letter limits. The headroom message indicates how much weight remains before the next band, although a change in thickness or another dimension can still change the tier first.

A parcel result lists actual, volumetric and billable weight. If volumetric weight governs, reducing empty space may lower the price. The chart visualizes the stepped rate structure, while the comparison table shows whether alternative packaging is cheaper. Copy Estimate creates a text summary; Copy Shareable Link stores the entered scenario in the page address.

Limitations and assumptions for Canada Post postage estimates

This Canada Post calculator is an independent planning tool, not an official rating system. Built-in letter prices should be confirmed before a large mailing because Canada Post can revise prices, definitions and acceptance rules. Parcel results are only as accurate as the user-supplied rate values and density factor. The calculator does not retrieve zones, contract discounts or live account prices.

Displayed amounts exclude GST, HST, QST, fuel surcharges and optional services such as registration, signature or added coverage. The letter classifier checks the principal dimensions, thickness and weight, but it cannot inspect shape, flexibility, address placement, prohibited contents or other mailing standards. For a payable amount and final acceptance decision, use Canada Post’s official Find a rate service or ask at a post office.

Canada Post postage calculator questions

Is this an official Canada Post calculator?

No. It is an independent estimator. Confirm current prices and acceptance requirements directly with Canada Post.

Why can two domestic stamps have different prices?

The first domestic band distinguishes a Permanent stamp from a booklet, coil or pane from a single stamp bought separately. That distinction does not apply to heavier domestic bands.

Why must parcel rates be entered manually?

Parcel prices depend on origin, destination, service and customer agreement. Entering values from the relevant quote avoids presenting one zone’s price as a national rate.

Does dimensional weight replace actual weight?

Not automatically. The calculator compares both values and uses the higher one as billable weight.

Depot Dispatch: the parcel packing game

Depot Dispatch is a packing bench, not a quiz. Each order arrives as loose items with real centimetre dimensions and a mass in kilograms. You rotate the items, pick the axis they are stacked along and decide whether a fragile order gets cushioning. The box is built around whatever arrangement you leave on the bench, and the box is what Canada Post prices.

The dimensioning cage shows the box you have created, the scale shows actual weight (contents plus corrugated tare) beside volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ density factor), and the band ladder on the right shows the billable weight climbing through the base band and each rounded-up step. Flatten a box to drop a rung and you keep the difference as profit; leave air in it and volumetric weight takes over. Watch the girth meter too: length plus girth over 200 cm, or any side over 100 cm, adds an oversize surcharge that no amount of repacking will hide.

Depot Dispatch

Twelve orders, one packing bench. Build the cheapest legal box for every order and bank the difference between the prepaid postage and what Canada Post actually charges.

  • Rotate items and change the stacking axis to shrink the box.
  • Billable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
  • Every part of a step above the base band is charged as a whole step.
  • Fragile orders must ship with cushioning or the damage claim wipes out the profit.
