For a savings timeline, the calculator solves for the number of monthly periods needed for a starting balance and recurring end-of-month deposits to grow to a target. Here F is the savings target, P is current savings, C is the monthly contribution, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of months. Solving that relationship for the timeline gives n=ln(C+rF)ln(C+rP)ln(1+r). The calculation treats deposits as arriving at the end of each month and compounds interest monthly.

In a savings-goal timeline, a larger monthly deposit, a higher assumed return, or a larger current balance reduces the estimated wait. A higher target does the opposite. Interest has a larger effect on savings goals with longer timelines, but an assumed return is not guaranteed. A high annual rate may reflect a riskier investment, while a cash account may have a changing yield. For a savings goal with a zero interest rate, the calculation becomes the remaining amount divided by the monthly contribution: n=FPC.
