Neither result establishes reserves, permitting prospects, title, recoverability, financing availability, or the commercial terms of an actual mining agreement. Domestic mineral royalty inputs and their roles

Each later year uses revenue minus operating cost as gross profit and then applies the effective tax rate. Formula: Discounted mineral royalty and self-development cash flows

For each mineral-development scenario, the calculator discounts the year-zero cash flow and every annual cash flow at the entered discount rate. Royalty cash flow is the lease bonus at the start plus annual revenue multiplied by the applicable royalty rate. Self-development begins with capital cost and the bond less the credit, then adds annual after-tax operating profit. The displayed NPV is the sum of those discounted cash flows:

Here, each cash flow is assigned to its corresponding year and r is the discount rate expressed as a decimal. The payback result is different from NPV: it tracks undiscounted cumulative self-development cash flow beginning with the initial outlay and reports the first whole year in which that running total is no longer negative. A project can therefore have a reported payback year while still having a lower discounted value than the royalty alternative.

A useful comparison tests the assumptions that materially change a mineral ownerโ€™s decision rather than combining unrelated inputs into a single score. First, compare the offered royalty rate and bonus with the capital cost and bond required for self-development. Next, vary commodity price, recovery, operating cost, and the domestic sourcing premium to see how annual revenue and after-tax profit respond. Finally, reconsider the discount rate and analysis horizon, since distant cash flows receive less weight in both NPVs.

A self-development case may improve with lower capital requirements, a confirmed credit, better recovery, lower operating cost, or a reliable premium for domestic material. Those changes have different timing and risk characteristics even when their headline dollar amounts appear similar.

Limitations and mineral-rights due diligence

This mineral royalty comparison assumes the same annual recovered output, effective price, operating cost, and after-tax profit in every operating year. It does not model declining grades, ramp-up periods, outages, debt service, depreciation, loss carryforwards, production taxes, severance taxes, transportation charges, reclamation spending beyond the entered bond, or changes in the timing of a credit. It also treats the environmental bond as an immediate year-zero cost and does not model a later release of that bond.
