Millet rotation profitability: scope and boundaries
This millet rotation calculator compares two production plans on the same land area and over the same number of years: (A) a millet-first rotation (a millet year followed by a rotation/intercrop year) and (B) a baseline monocrop grown every year. Enter crop yields, farmgate prices, and per-hectare costs, then add any applicable support payment, soil-health incentive, or fertilizer saving. The calculation returns cycle-level net profit per hectare, total net cash for the entered area, and discounted net present value (NPV).
This is a deliberately compact budgeting tool for testing a millet rotation, rather than a replacement for a complete enterprise budget. Millet rotation inputs and units
Millet rotation yields are entered in tonnes per hectare, while crop prices are entered in ₹ per tonne. Costs, support payments, incentives, and fertilizer savings use ₹ per hectare. The calculator converts each season's per-hectare margin into a farm total by multiplying it by the cultivated area.
- Cultivated area (hectares): the area assigned to the millet rotation or baseline comparison. Enter only the portion of the farm under consideration when the rest is managed differently.
- Rotation cycle length (years): the comparison period. The model places millet in year 1 and the named rotation crop in year 2; if the period exceeds two years, it uses the baseline crop for years 3 onward.
- Annual discount rate (%): the rate used to discount the yearly millet-rotation cash flows for NPV. A farm borrowing rate, target return, or planning rate can be used if it suits the decision.
- Millet season: millet yield × millet price + support, less millet input and post-harvest costs.
- Rotation/intercrop season: rotation-crop yield × price + soil incentive + fertilizer saving, less rotation input cost.
- Baseline crop: baseline yield × price, less its input and post-harvest costs.
Millet rotation profitability formulas
For each millet, rotation-crop, or baseline season, the calculator applies farm-gate accounting:
- Revenue per ha = (Yield × Price) + applicable incentives or savings
- Cost per ha = Input cost + Post-harvest cost where that field is provided
- Net per ha = Revenue per ha − Cost per ha
For a millet rotation lasting two or more years, year 1 uses the millet net return and year 2 uses the rotation-crop net return. Any later years use the baseline-crop net return, while the baseline comparison uses that baseline return in every year. The calculator discounts each annual farm cash flow as NPV = Σ (CashFlowyear / (1 + r)year−1), where r is the annual discount rate. The table separates undiscounted cycle cash from this discounted NPV comparison.
Millet rotation assumptions and limitations
A millet profitability comparison is only as useful as its assumptions about the crop sequence and the timing of receipts and costs.
- Cycle structure: year 1 is millet and year 2 is the selected rotation crop. For a cycle longer than two years, the current model assigns the baseline crop to years 3 and later.
- Timing: each year's net cash is treated as occurring at the same point in the year; the model does not separate sowing, harvest, and delayed-payment dates.
- Prices and yields: values remain constant within an entered scenario. Use different entries to test rainfall, yield, or market-price risk.
- Incentives and savings: soil incentives and fertilizer savings are counted as cash-equivalent benefits. Reduce them if eligibility, payment, or verification costs are uncertain.
Worked example: a two-year millet and chickpea rotation
Consider 3 hectares over a 2-year period with a 6% annual discount rate. Enter finger millet at 1.4 t/ha and ₹28,000/t, with ₹12,000/ha in input cost, ₹3,500/ha in post-harvest cost, and ₹2,000/ha in support. For chickpea as the rotation crop, enter 1.1 t/ha at ₹42,000/t, ₹15,000/ha in input cost, a ₹1,800/ha soil incentive, and ₹2,500/ha in fertilizer savings. For a maize baseline, enter 3.5 t/ha at ₹19,000/t, with ₹27,000/ha in input cost and ₹5,000/ha in post-harvest cost.
These entries produce a millet net return of ₹25,700/ha and a chickpea-year net return of ₹35,500/ha, for ₹61,200/ha across the rotation. The maize baseline returns ₹34,500/ha per year, or ₹69,000/ha across two years. On 3 hectares, the rotation's undiscounted net cash is ₹183,600 versus ₹207,000 for continuous maize; discounting the second-year cash flow at 6% gives an NPV difference of about −₹23,598. Use this sort of check to confirm that higher yields or prices raise the relevant season's margin and higher costs lower it. If a result is unexpectedly large, check tonnes versus kilograms and per-hectare values versus whole-farm totals.
