Hourly value or lost wage rate converts time into dollars. Some policies reimburse documented lost wages only, sometimes with a daily or weekly cap. The calculator accepts any nonnegative hourly value, but the amount entered should match the type of time loss you are trying to model.

Legal fees and professional help may include an attorney consultation or paid restoration assistance. Administrative costs cover smaller items such as certified postage, copies, notarization, reports, and document replacement. Travel can include mileage, transit fares, parking, or rides required for in-person recovery tasks. Enter each expense once.

Credit monitoring is entered as an annual amount. If a service costs $20 per month, enter $240 per year. The calculator multiplies that figure by the monitoring duration. Free monitoring offered after a breach should not be entered as a personal expense unless you expect to purchase additional service.

The coverage limit is the maximum modeled payment. The deductible is removed before the reimbursement percentage is applied. The reimbursement rate is entered from 0% to 100%. A rate below 100% may represent a policy share, a conservative eligibility assumption, or a scenario in which only part of the post-deductible cost is reimbursed.

The identity theft cost and reimbursement formulas

The total modeled recovery cost, C, combines the value of restoration time with the direct expenses. Let h be restoration hours, v the hourly value, L legal and professional fees, A administrative costs, T travel, m annual monitoring cost, and y monitoring years:

The deductible, D, is subtracted without allowing the reimbursement base, B, to fall below zero:

The estimated reimbursement, R, equals the smaller of the policy limit, K, and the reimbursement base multiplied by percentage p. The estimated out-of-pocket amount, O, is what remains:

The suggested limit adds a 25% planning buffer to the total and rounds upward to the next $1,000. That buffer can absorb modest underestimation, but it is not a prediction of claim severity or a recommendation to buy a particular product.

Worked example: a modest identity restoration claim

Using the default values, 25 hours valued at $35 per hour produce $875 of modeled time cost. Adding $75 of administrative expenses creates a total recovery cost of $950. Legal fees, travel, and monitoring are zero in this example.

After the $100 deductible, the reimbursement base is $850. A 100% reimbursement rate leaves the modeled payment at $850, and the $25,000 limit does not restrict it. Estimated out-of-pocket cost is therefore $100. The suggested limit calculation adds 25% to $950, producing $1,187.50, and rounds that amount upward to $2,000.

If the reimbursement rate were changed to 80%, the payment would fall to $680 and out-of-pocket cost would rise to $270. That difference illustrates why the percentage must be applied after the deductible rather than to the original total.

How to interpret your identity theft insurance result

Read the result from the incident cost downward. Total estimated costs describe the scenario before insurance. Eligible costs equal that total because this simplified model treats every entered category as eligible. Estimated reimbursement reflects the deductible, percentage, and limit. Estimated out of pocket is the difference between total cost and reimbursement.

An out-of-pocket result close to the deductible is expected when reimbursement is 100% and the coverage limit is comfortably above the claim. A larger remaining amount can result from a partial reimbursement rate, a binding limit, or a deductible greater than the total. If the reimbursement is unexpectedly high, verify that you did not enter a monthly monitoring fee as though it were annual or count the same expense in two categories.

The suggested coverage limit should be interpreted as a comparison target, not as expected reimbursement. A real policy may have a $25,000 overall limit but only a smaller sublimit for lost wages, legal fees, or monitoring. Review those category rules before assuming the displayed total would qualify.
