An immediate sale at $35 produces gross proceeds of about $4,411.76. The approximately $1,411.76 positive spread over the $3,000 purchase cost is treated as ordinary income in this scenario. At the default 32 percent ordinary tax rate, the model estimates $451.76 of tax, $3,960.00 of net proceeds, and $960.00 of after-tax profit. Your plan documents may impose rules the share-count calculation does not capture. A plan can restrict contributions, limit purchases, disallow fractional shares, or refund funds that cannot buy a whole share.
